Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Two people, partially obscured by soap suds, wash a wheelchair van’s windshield. One uses a sponge to scrub, while the other appears to rinse. Trees are visible in the background.

Spring is finally here! The days are getting longer and the weather is warming up, which means it’s a great time to give your wheelchair accessible vehicle a good cleaning. A clean vehicle makes for a more comfortable ride and helps maintain its longevity. Follow this checklist to get your accessible vehicle ready for the season!

1. Get Rid of Clutter

  • Check door pockets, the glove box and storage spaces for trash, old parking permits or unused items.
  • Keep essential items like an emergency kit, hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes in an easily accessible spot.
  • Store extra mobility equipment safely.

2. Clean the Inside

  • Vacuum everywhere: Get rid of dirt and dust from the seats, floors and ramps. Make sure to clean around wheelchair securement points.
  • Wipe down surfaces: Use a gentle cleaner to clean the dashboard, door handles and cup holders.
  • Clean wheelchair securements and seat belts: Check for dirt that could make them harder to use.

3. Check Ramps and Lifts

Your ramp or wheelchair lift is an important part of your vehicle, so keep it in good shape:

  • Remove dirt: Use a brush or cloth to clear away dust and debris.
  • Lubricate moving parts: Apply the right lubricant to hinges and joints so they move smoothly.
  • Test it out: Open/close the ramp or lift a few times to check that it’s working properly. Consider getting it checked by a professional if you hear strange noises or the equipment isn’t working quite right.

4. Wash the Outside

  • Wash the exterior, including any hard-to-reach areas.
  • Clean the windows and mirrors so you have clear visibility.
  • Check decals and accessibility stickers to make sure they’re in good condition and easy to see.

5. Do a Quick Maintenance Check

Spring is a great time to make sure your vehicle is running well:

  • Check tire pressure and tread depth.
  • Look at fluid levels including oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid.
  • Test the battery—cold weather can drain it, so it might need a charge or replacement.
  • Check your power sliding doors and entry systems to make sure they’re working properly.
  • Schedule a professional inspection if you need one, especially if your vehicle was driven in winter conditions.

6. Freshen Up the Air

  • Use an air freshener to get rid of any stale winter odors.
  • Open the windows on a nice day to let in fresh air.

7. Check Accessibility Features

Spring cleaning isn’t just about making your vehicle look nice—it’s also a good time to check important accessibility features:

  • Inspect hand controls for any wear and tear.
  • Make sure your wheelchair securement systems are working properly.
  • Check backup cameras and sensors to see if they’re working correctly.
  • Test voice-activated or touch-free controls if your vehicle has them.
